Hanoch Levin is one of the most original and visionary writers of the 20th century and Israel’s greatest dramatist, whose work has defined the development of Israeli theatre. Levin was among the founders of the Israeli Playwrights Union, the resident playwright of the Cameri Theatre and worked extensively with the National Theatre in Tel Aviv, Habima. During his thirty-year career he wrote fifty-six plays and directed twenty-two of them in all the major theatres in Israel. His unique style constantly surprises the audiences with satirical twists and fantastic narratives, and is heavily charged with poignant poetic and visual images. In 1998 Levin received the prize of the Israeli Theatre Academy for Requiem.

Although of world stature, lingual barriers have precluded Levin from receiving the universal recognition he deserves. Murder (Gate Theatre, 2002) is his only play produced in London. This is the first collection of Hanoch Levin’s works published in the UK. The translations of the six plays included are all new commissions. This is their first publication in the English language.
